Preparation to do this:
Tools You’ll Need:
Small Phillips-head screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver or plastic prying tool
Replacement keyboard (compatible with your laptop model)
Tweezers (optional, for handling small screws or connectors)
Steps to Replace a Laptop Keyboard:
1. Power Down and Unplug the Laptop
Shut down your laptop completely.
Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable). For laptops with non-removable batteries, disconnect the internal battery connector if possible (advanced step).
2. Remove the Old Keyboard
For Keyboards with Screws on the Bottom:
Flip the laptop over and locate the screws securing the keyboard (often marked with a keyboard icon).
Unscrew these screws and set them aside.
Open the laptop lid and gently lift the keyboard from the top edge using a plastic prying tool or your fingers.
Carefully disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable from the motherboard by lifting the connector latch and sliding the cable out.
For Keyboards with Clips or Bezel:
Open the laptop lid and look for small clips or a bezel (plastic frame) around the keyboard.
Use a plastic prying tool to gently release the clips or remove the bezel.
Once the keyboard is free, disconnect the ribbon cable as described above.
3. Install the New Keyboard
Connect the ribbon cable of the new keyboard to the motherboard, ensuring it’s properly seated and the connector latch is closed.
Carefully place the new keyboard into position, aligning it with the screw holes or clips.
Secure the keyboard by reattaching the screws or snapping the clips/bezel back into place.
4. Reassemble the Laptop
Reinstall the battery (if removed) and plug in the power adapter.
Power on the laptop to test the new keyboard.
If everything works, reassemble any remaining parts (e.g., bottom panel screws).
